American Government Study Guide

Some representatives vote based upon how their political party wants them to vote. No matter the reason of even how a representative personally feels, they feel they must vote for their party or else they would lose party support. Other representatives serve their constituents , or people within their voting district and vote based upon their interests. Lastly, representatives also vote based upon the people that helped them get into ofice, like with interest groups. 5.5 Private vs. Public Interest Groups Private interest groups usual take the form of seeking speciic beneits that it into the desires of the group they represent with a speciic or narrow set of goals. Corporations, manufacturing groups, and political institutions are examples of private interest groups. The goal is for personal gain over the overall beneit of everyone. They often seek government subsidies, government jobs or contracts, or even tax beneits or exemptions. Public interest groups usually aim to beneit the greater good and aren’t necessarily set up as for pr oit institutions. These interest groups lobby for things that will ultimately beneit everyone, even if not everyone agrees with them. A perfect example of this are organizations that argue for efforts that will help the environment. Environmental groups often lobby for changes that will beneit all of humanity in the future.
