College Writing Study Guide ii. Why is the opposition wrong – We already have two Wal-Marts, a Meijer, and a struggling independent grocery store in town. Adding another supermarket would spell the end for our local business, and it would do nothing to increase the artistic proile of th e city, which has been a consistent goal throughout the current administration. Turning our backs on our young ilmmakers would rep- resent a betrayal of their talents. With an outline like this, it would be easy to expand on some of those points once we move to the composition of the essay. We would want to expand on the irst paragraph by using some narrative or descriptive writing about what the new theater would look like and what kinds of experiences participants could expect. The second and third supporting points provide the opportunity to develop our arguments in the second point and point out contradictions and holes in the opposing argument in the third paragraph. By the end of turning this outline into a full essay, we will be ready to conclude, painting a picture of a different, more culturally alive city because we renovated the theater instead of turning it into a Wal-Mart. 5.4 Table of Key Terms Argumentative Writing Narrative Writing Rhetoric Ethos Pathos Logos Allusions Alliteration Anaphora Euphemism Hyperbole Metaphors 5.5 Discussion Questions 1.
