Relationships and Intimacy: - Marriage

o Elderly adults who are in long-standing marriages are generally satisfied with their relationships. o Older individuals who are married tend to live longer, happier, and healthier lives. - Widowhood o Widowers (males) and widows (females) are more likely to be unhealthy and experience illness. o Those who lose a spouse to death are at high risk for dying in the following year. o The loss of spouses is extremely stressful. - Friendships o Friendships remain important into late adulthood. o Friendships are especially important among unmarried or widowed individuals. o Siblings often grow closer in late adulthood. Conflicts and Concerns of Late Adulthood: Older individuals often experience health issues. In addition, they may experience elder abuse : the maltreatment of the elderly which may not be limited to physical abuse. Older individuals may also experience an inability to care for themselves. If individuals experience the inability to care for themselves, they may require a long-term care facility. They may also be in danger of experiencing a drug interaction. Older individuals also have to be concerned with having proper nutrition.
