Characteristics of a Good Graph

• The graph contains a well-written title that precisely describes to the reader what they are looking at. • Axes are labeled with the variable name and its units. • The grids are consistently scaled (e.g., 0, 5,10, ... and not 0, 2, 5, 6, ...) • An appropriate graph is selected to convey the type of information presented.

When to Use a ...

• Line Graph - When you want to track changes over a period of time • Pie Chart - When you are trying to compare parts of a whole • Bar Graph - When you are trying to compare parts of a whole • Histogram - When you need to see the frequency of continuous (measurable) data in a dataset • Scatterplot - When you are trying to determine relationships between two different things
