Music Art and music of pagan Rome were of concern to early Christians. Pagan entertainment was seen as mockery and created competition for church services. The Church associated instrumental music with Rome’s pagan past, and Christian music became almost entirely vocal. Soloists and choirs typically sang chanted hymns and psalms. 2.4 Islamic Culture Philosophy Greek and Persian philosophical and scientific works were translated into Arabic, and advances were made in medicine, astronomy, math, and architecture. There were many libraries and knowledge centers where men would gather and create new ideas and inventions. During this time, inventions were remarkable, and we still use some of these inventions, including the water wheel. Architecture The Muslim people standardized mosque architecture. Façades were turned inwards to face tiled courtyards, and walls were decorated with mosaic scenes depicting paradise. Mosques generally contained a rectangular, open courtyard and a prayer hall. The columned aisles of the prayer hall directed worshippers to Mecca. Besides mosaics, the interiors of the mosques were decorated with arabesque patterns and calligraphic script.
