P inting Raphael remained a favorite out of the High Renaissance artists, catching the eye of the current Pope Julius II. Raphael is best known for his clarity and spiritual harmony in his works. He uniquely combined humanist ideas and Renaissance techniques that can be seen in his work of Transfiguration. Michelangelo 's paintings thrived during this period, and he was commissioned for massive projects, such as the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. He also combined classical and Christian ideas. The fresco style was popular in Rome and the Vatican City, but not so much in Venice because of the damp climate. Because of this, oil paints became a popular medium to use. It resulted in the artwork having vibrant hues. These paintings are known for their ability to show mood and movement. Oil paints allowed painters to focus on creating small details, and painters could now ‘over-paint,’ meaning they could build up layers of colors over time. There were other painters who exaggerated or altered proportions, posture, and expression, and toyed with the rules of perspectives and dimensions. These were known as mannerists . The resulting effect showed a tension between illusion and reality. Artists presented traditional subjects in dramatic, new ways. As the Renaissance period continued, art was not spared from the religious Reformation. Paintings from the reformation were visually intense and often encompassed a realism that was combinedwith unrestrained religious emotionalism. Jan Van Eyck , a very influential painter of his time, was the acknowledged master of Northern realism. His works included subtle details and a mastery of color, light, and space. Similarly, Albrecht Durer was a painter known as the first genuinely humanist artist of the Northern Renaissance. His works included many woodcuts and engravings that were known for their detail. These works are renowned for their efforts to improve artists' statuses and their engagement of religious controversies. Architecture Geek and Roman architecture continued to influence Renaissance buildings with similar floor plans, restrained classical decoration, and columns. St. Peter's Basilica, in the Vatican City, was one of the most expensive and most elaborate pieces of architecture built during the Renaissance. 6.2 The Late Renaissance in Europe Philosophy During the Late Renaissance, the Christian Reformation movement began. Martin Luther was the man who led the break from the Catholic church in Germany in 1527, making way for the creation of the Protestant branches.
