Literature Thomas More's famous Utopia work , written in 1516, took issue with Northern Europe's Renaissance-era social ills. He saw England's greed, violence, and corruption as an outgrowth of "the rich seeking to advance their own interests" at others' expense. Utopia proposed a way of life based on Christian justice and humble piety. Michel de Montaigne wrote a book called Skepticism , which spoke about constant self-examination. His conversational and introspective writings marked the birth of the essay as a literary approach. His works questioned the superiority of humans and suggested a reliance on experience and observation.
