Humanities Study Guide
Anton Chekov employed Realist techniques to delve into human psychology. He emphasized the complexity of humanity in realistic settings, as seen in Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. Chekov created characters that represented an idealistic landowning class struggling to adapt to the industrial world. Henrik Ibsen also examined the inner conflicts of middle-class society. His works explored topics like venereal disease, marriage, and the role of women. He was praised for tackling topics of social and philosophical interests. Hisworks TheWild Duck and Hedda Gabler used powerful and ambiguous symbols to probe beneath middle-class appearances. His most shocking play was A Doll's House, where the main character Nora realizes she is expected to act like a doll, and take care of her husband’s needs and ignore her own. She radically announces that she will be leaving her husband to pursue her freedom at the end of the play, an act that stood out from conventional thought.
