N104: Essentials of Nursing Care - Health Safety

N104 Study Guide

Chapter 5 1. C - The developmental theory states that as a child moves from one stage to another, the family will also move from one stage to another. This may result in dysfunction. 2. A - Although the other responses are also roles of the pediatric nurse, in a case of suspected abuse, the nurse must first act as the child's advocate. The nurse acts as the child's advocate when the nurse helps the family make appropriate choices for the child. In an abusive situation, the nurse is required by law to intervene and report the suspected abuse as the child's advocate. 3. C - The young child responds well to teaching that involves play. When teaching the young child, the nurse should get down to the child's level and speak to the child while including the parents in the teaching. 4. B - The school age child is curious about how things work and wants to know why things are the way they are. The infant responds best to cuddling and gentle touch. The adolescent is beginning to think abstractly and understand long range planning. 5. D - Infants have no ability to control their temperatures and must be kept warm. Sun screen should not be used in infants; instead, the infant should be kept covered to prevent sunburn. The infant and small child should never be given toys with small parts that can be swallowed and block the airway. Stuffed toys in the infant's crib may be a suffocation hazard. 6. D - In addition to the correct characteristics listed, the child's temperament can also be defined by persistence, initial reaction to new situations, adaptability, mood intensity and regularity. 7. A - Tenting is a sign of loss of skin turgor, which is typically associated with dehydration or nutrition issues. 8. C - Bathing a child in cold water will result in shivering, which is the body's mechanism to increase the body temperature. If the temperature does not respond to the antipyretic, a sponge bath with tepid water can be used. The nurse and parent must be alert to prevent shivering. 9. B - Neonatal mortality is associated with low birth weight, African American ethnicity, and male gender. 10. A - Although the other issues might be seen in adolescent African American males, the leading cause of death for this group is homicide.
