Teaching Principles In order for the teaching/learning interaction to be successful, the nurse must have a firm grasp on several teaching principles. • All teaching should be based on the patient’s needs and goals as identified through the nursing process. • The patient or caregiver should be given the opportunity to help decide what will be taught, how, when, and where the teaching will occur. Most adults learn best when the teaching is broken up into 15-30 minute “chunks.” • Children should typically be taught in much shorter segments, and when possible, the teaching should involve an element of play. • When possible, the nurse should attempt to involve all of the learning domains ina teaching session. • Teaching can be done in a variety of ways. The nurse must recognize when one method is preferable over another. Typically, more than one method is used in any teaching situation. These methods include: o Lecture: A one-way transmission of vital information o Discussion: An exchange of ideas between two or more people that encourages participation; this idea of “teach back” is a method that allows the nurse to discover what the patient has heard and what he understands o Demonstration: The method usually chosen to teach a new skill; the nurse does the skill and the patient or caregiver demonstrates the skill for the nurse to evaluate
