N104: Essentials of Nursing Care – Health Safety Study Guide Dunn’s High-Level Wellness This model of high-level wellness is a concept that defines wellness in the individual as a state that is enhanced by wellness in the family, community, and society. In this model, the health of the family will help the individual meet basic needs with little effort. The healthy community will enhance the health of the family by providing safe water, sanitation, and environment. Finally, the society must be well in order for communities to be at maximum wellness. When any part of the whole is disrupted, high-level wellness will be impossible for the individual to attain. In a favorable environment the individual may have relatively poor health, but it will be protected; in an unfavorable environment, the individual may never achieve high-level wellness and may suffer from very poor health. High-level wellness model:

Rosenstock’s and Becker’s Health Belief Model This health belief model assumes that good health is the objective of all people. This model is useful in determining whether an individual is likely to participate in preventative and health promotion activities. Health belief models assume that people attain health based on certain perceptions including: • Susceptibility: If an individual perceives that he is at high risk for a disease or disorder, he may be more motivated to take steps to prevent thedisorder. • Seriousness: If the individual perceives that the illness or disorder will have serious consequences, she may take measures to prevent the disorder. • Threat: The perceived susceptibility and seriousness of the condition will combine to determine the threat that the individual feels. The higher the perceived threat, the more likely the individual will seek preventative care.
