The healthcare delivery system is influenced by various factors. These factors include changing demographic patterns and health issues, cultural and spiritual values and practices, economic pressures, legislation, and education and technology. Socioeconomic factors are also a significant influence affecting the evolution and development of nursing. The woman’s movement and labor movement are examples of these influences. The healthcare system consists of multiple types of organizations, which are characterized according to the types of services provided, length of care provided, ownership of the organization, and accreditation of the healthcare delivery system. Both state and federal agencies act as regulatory bodies for healthcare delivery systems. Nurses play a role in the development of healthcare legislation and policy, along with professional nursing organizations, other healthcare organizations, and special interest groups. Nursing practice includes the education of nurses, rights, duties, and responsibilities of nursing. The practice involves ethics, the law relating to nursing, and the methods and mechanisms for the continuous improvement of the practice. The nurse should understand the various laws that influence nursing, as well as the ethical issues that impact her practice. She should understand her own values as well as those of the agency in which she practices.
