Quality and Safety Education (QSEN) Teamwork and Collaboration QSEN defines this competency as functioning effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making to achieve quality patient care. The newly graduated RN should be able to describe his or her own strengths, limitations, and values as a team member and should be able to describe the scopes of practice and roles of other health team members. He or she should be able to analyze differences in communication style preferences among team members, patients, and families and describe effective strategies to communicate and resolve conflict. Achieving this competency also means that the new RN understands the impact of team functioning on safety and quality of care, as well as being able to describe barriers and catalysts of effective team functioning.
