N108: Transition to the Registered Professional Nurse

N108: Transition to the Registered Professional Nurse Role Study Guide providing emotional support, and encouraging the involvement of family and friends if the patient wishes. Resource Management The careful use of resources is part of the ANA’s Standards of Professional Practice. Resources include work space, supplies, equipment, budgeted funds, and services. Today, health care workers are expected to deliver high quality care efficiently with effective use of resources, while maintaining standards of patient care and safety. The RN should be aware of the budgetary constraints of facilities and how his or her use of resources affects the budget. Nurses should then try to contain costs by decreasing ineffective use of resources and time, and finding more efficient and cost-effective ways to deliver care. 3.14 Informatics and Technology The use of informatics is another QSEN competency. It directs that the nurse use information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making. Communication is critical in today’s increasingly complex and integrated health care system. As the level of patient care advances, communication continues to span across multiple health care fields and relies on the expertise of practitioners and medical experts. There is an increase in the use of technology, such as mobile computers and wireless solutions, and automated exchanges between providers and patients. Documentation is essential to keeping all parties informed and up-to-date on the patient’s current condition and medical treatment. Nursing informatics is largely focused on improved documentation within health care facilities to reduce operating and patient care costs, as well as to improve productivity and enhance the quality of patient care. Computerized provider order entry (CPOE) has freed nurses from order transcription and related, order-clarifying phone calls, as well as improving patient safety. It has been estimated that provider order entry can reduce serious medication error and adverse drug events (ADEs) by 55%. Additionally, test results are now available at the point of care shortly after the tests are completed, allowing interventions to be initiated in a much timelier manner. Security and patient privacy must be upheld while achieving the goal of transforming data into useful knowledge. Integrating informatics with evidence-based practice (EBP) can only help improve the care provided to patients. Because there is so much information available today, in order to use technology to support evidence-based practice, nurses must understand and be literate about information. Key knowledge includes: • Knowing the kind of information needed • Being able to efficiently and effectively access the information • Being able to critically examine the information obtained and the sources from which it came • Using the information effectively, as an individual or team member, to achieve a specific purpose
