N108: Transition to the Registered Professional Nurse

N108: Transition to the Registered Professional Nurse Role Study Guide colleges established two-year programs in nursing. The focus of this report led to the establishment of more associate degree programs. In the second part of the study, authored by Lasser G. Gotkin, 811 graduates were evaluated. Gotkin presented arguments for more AD programs. Today, the majority of U.S. nurses graduate from AD programs. AD graduates routinely achieve scores on licensure exams that are equal to or higher than BSN and diploma graduates. The Study of Credentialing in Nursing: A New Approach The ANA authored this report in 1979. The study was originally intended to settle issues over whether the ANA or NLN was responsible for credentialing nurses and schools. However, the NLN continued to accredit schools of nursing and agencies. The ANA examined and certified continuing education programs, nurse specialists, and nurse practitioners. The National Commission on Nursing Study The American Hospital Association and others authored this report in 1983. It focused on the working environment of nurses, the relationship of nursing practice to nursing education, and the status of nursing as a profession. Five major categories were covered by the report: • The image of nursing • Nursing education models • Nurses as a resource in healthcare • The emerging role of the nursing profession in determining the nature and scope of practice • Nurse participation in healthcare decisions National Commission on Nursing Implementation Project The NCNIP was formed in 1985 to implement the recommendations from the National Commission on Nursing and the Institute of Medicine Report. The NCNIP reports progress in three key areas: nursing service delivery, nursing education, and nursing information. The Health Professions Education for the Future: Schools in Service to the Nation This report was authored by the Pew Foundation in 1993. This report reinforced that the education of health professions was not adequate to meet the health needs of America. The report established the need for nurse-midwives, nurse practitioners, and discussed the role of nurses in health promotion. The report included a Summary of Competencies for the year 2005. These goals were: • Greater diversity in nursing • More education done in communities • Putting faculty into direct care areas • Emphasis on interdisciplinary teams to care for people in a community setting • Graduate level clinical training for nurses in areas that reduce cost and improve access • Strategic planning in nursing schools
