N108: Transition to the Registered Professional Nurse Role Study Guide • Education for those who work in nursing should take place in institutions of learning within the general system of education. • The education for all those who are licensed to practice nursing should take place in institutions of higher education. • The minimum preparation for beginning professional nursing practice at the present time should be baccalaureate degree education in nursing. • The minimum preparation for beginning technical nursing practice at the present time should be associate degree education in nursing. • Education for assistants in the health service occupations should be short, intensive preservice programs in vocational education institutions rather than on-the-job training programs. Nursing: A Social Policy Statement The ANA published this statement in 2003. It included definitions of accountability, autonomy, authority, and responsibility for nursing. It stated that nursing is the “protection, promotion and optimization of health and abilities; prevention of illness and injury; alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response; and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities and populations.” The Human Genome Project This project, whichwas undertaken from1990 to 2000, was coordinated by the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. The goals of the project were: • Identifying each gene in human DNA • Determining the gene sequence of the chemical base pairs that form human DNA • Storing the data and improving data tools for analysis • Transferring technology to the private sector • Addressing the ethical, legal, and social issue resulting from this catalog of human DNA The Future of Nursing 2010: Leading Change and Advancing Health In 2008, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) launched a two-year initiative to respond to the need to assess and transform the nursing profession. The report advocated four key points: • Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training. • Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression. • Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States. • Effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and information infrastructure.
