N108: Transition to the Registered Professional Nurse Role Study Guide The ICN concerns itself with such issues as the social and economic welfare of nurses, the role of the nursing healthcare, and the roles of national nursing organizations throughout the world and their relationships to their governing bodies. Recent efforts have focused on issues like career ladders, educational standards, research, human rights, a nurse’s role in planning of a national health policy, international nursing migration, nursing regulation, and developing an innovative database. American Nurses Association (ANA) The ANA was formed in 1897 and is the professional organization for all registered nurses. The ANA has identified a set of strategic imperatives that structure its efforts. These include championing professional practice and excellence, formulating healthcare and public policy as they affect the profession and the public, providing accurate and comprehensive health policy information based on knowledge from research, advocating nurses in the workforce and thorough workplace rights, facilitating unification and advancement of the profession, and improving its own organizational structures and resources. • Membership: Membership is comprised of the state nurse’s associations, plus Guam and the Virgin Islands. The individual nurse belongs to the ANA through the state nurse’s association. The ANA claims to represent all nurses but only about 7% of U.S. nurses are actual members. • Purpose : o To promote professional development and economic welfare of nurses through the arm of the ANA that does collective bargaining (the United Nurses Association). o Foster high standards of nursing. o Improve health standards and services available to all. • Functions: o Code of ethical conduct o Credentialing systems o Nursing research o Standards of nursing practice, education, and service o National and international legislation o Information about nursing o Promotion of the economic and general welfare of nurses o Professional development of nurses o National and international leadership in nursing o Affirmative action and collective bargaining o Communication with members and consumer advocates o Human rights related to nursing care o Representing nursing in other forums o Services to the state nurse associations
