N108: Transition to the Registered Professional Nurse

N108: Transition to the Registered Professional Nurse Role Study Guide life and well-being, and executing medical regimens as prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized physician or dentist. Diagnosing in the context of nursing practice means the identification of and discrimination between physical and psychosocial signs and symptoms essential to effective execution and management of the nursing regimen within the scope of practice of the registered professional nurse. Such diagnostic privilege is distinct from a medical diagnosis. Treating means selection and performance of those therapeutic measures essential to the effective management and execution of the nursing regimen. Human responses means those signs, symptoms, and processes which denote the individual's health need or reaction to an actual or potential health problem.” The definition of practice of practical nursing is: “The practice of nursing as a licensed practical nurse is defined as performing tasks and responsibilities within the framework of case finding; reinforcing the patient and family teaching program through health teaching, health counseling and provision of supportive and restorative care, under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed or otherwise legally authorized physician or dentist.” 1.12 Nursing as a Profession Characteristics of a Profession A profession, as described by legislation, defines the professional employee as: • Any employee engaged in work predominately intellectual and varied in character as opposed to routine mental, manual, mechanical, or physical work • Involving the consistent exercise of discretion and judgment in its performance • Of such a character that the output produced or the result accomplished cannot be standardized in relation to a given period of time • Requiring knowledge of an advanced type in a field of science or learning customarily acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction and study in an institution of higher learning or a hospital as distinguished from general academic education or from an apprenticeship, or from training in the performance of routine mental manual, or physical processes • Approach their activities earnestly, strive for excellence in performance, and demonstrate a sense of ethics and responsibility in relationship to their careers • Consider their work a lifelong endeavor rather than a stepping stone to another field of employment Sociologists have identified characteristics that make an occupation a profession.
