It begins in the urethra and moves along the ejaculatory duct system into the epididymis. Factors involved are STDs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis), tuberculosis, and mumps. This infection is common in males from childhood to elderly age. In men under 35 years, it is usually caused by chlamydia trachomatis. Children usually get the infection from a congenital malformation. Older men usually get the infection from urinary tract infections. One main complication in men wanting to still have children is infertility, so prompt treatment is important. Signs and symptoms of epididymitis: • Fever • Chills • Swelling of the groin • Pain in the groin • Bacteria in urine • Pus in urine Nursing assessment for epididymitis: • Assess pain level: location, duration, and character • Take vital signs: Temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure • Inquire about length of symptoms: swelling to the groin, recent urinary tract infections, sexual function, and history of multiple sexual partners • Visually assess area for swelling and have patient urinate to assess bladder emptying • Review laboratory data: o CBC with differential o Urinalysis with culture and sensitivity o Culture for gonorrhea and chlamydia Nursing diagnosis for epididymitis: • Altered body temperature related to fever, secondary to infection ©2017 Achieve Test Prep Page 172 of 204
