They are also known as the palatine tonsils and are located at the back of the throat, one on either side. In tonsillitis, the tonsils become inflamed due to bacterial infection or viral infection. The most common cause is the bacteria beta-hemolytic streptococci, more commonly called strep. The infection can also infect the adenoid glands to the side of the neck, which is known as adenoiditis. Tonsillitis is most common in children between the ages of five and ten years old. Bacterial infections need to be treated with antibiotics or complications can result including cardiac valve issues, cervical lymph node abscesses, otitis media, febrile seizures, upper airway obstruction, and trouble with eating and swallowing.
