Chapter 3: Quiz & Answer Key 1. You are caring for an infant who is just about 12 months old. Which assessment data is normal for the infant at this age? A. The infant had doubled their birth weight at twelve months. B. The infant had tripled their birth weight at twelve months. C. The mother reports that the infant is drinking 60 mLs per kilogram of its body weight. D. The infant had grown ¼ inch since last month. Correct Response : A Explanation : The mother's information about the infant consuming 60 mLs per kilogram of body weight and the infant's growth of 1/4 inch in a month are not typical assessment findings. Typically, infants are fed breast milk or formula every two to four hours, with a total daily intake of 80 to 100 mLs per kilogram of body weight. As newborns develop, they generally gain five to seven ounces in the initial six months and then double their birth weight within the first year . Similarly, the height or length of a newborn typically increases by an inch each month during the first 6 months and then by 1/2 inch each month until the infant reaches one year of age. (See Providing Care for Neonates, Infants, and Toddlers ) 2. A pregnant client asks how she can prevent getting Group B Strep. What is the LPN’s best response? A. “The Group B Strep vaccine is the only proven way to prevent the disease.” B. “You should have your partner wear a condom every time you have intercourse.” C. “You cannot prevent getting Group B Strep, you can only treat it.” D. “You should be extra vigilant about hand-washing, especially in the third trimester.” Correct Response : C Explanation : About 25% of females have Group B strep in their intestines, rectum, and vagina. It is not a sexually transmitted illness and is thought to be part of the normal flora. Testing is done for each pregnancy, usually five weeks before the planned delivery date, because the same woman may test negative in one and positive in another. To significantly lower the risk of difficulties for both the mother and the unborn child, a woman who tests positive for Group B Strep will be administered antibiotics during delivery. Hint : When reading questions, keep an eye out for terms like better, best, most, main, major, and primary/primarily. They suggest that there may be other acceptable responses, but the best option among the options is the one that is right. (See Evaluating the Maternal client for Antepartum Complications )
