● Weakness : A feeling of weakness or general malaise may be reported. ● Orthostatic Hypotension : Clients may experience a drop in blood pressure when changing positions, leading to dizziness or fainting. Signs and Symptoms of Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar) : Hypoglycemia occurs when blood glucose levels are too low. Nurses assess clients for the following signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia: ● Low Blood Glucose Levels : Confirmation through blood glucose monitoring is essential, with levels typically less than 70 mg/dL indicating hypoglycemia. ● Headache : Clients may report headaches. ● Anxiety : Feelings of anxiety or nervousness may occur.
● Slurred Speech : Speech may become difficult to understand. ● Dizziness : Clients may experience lightheadedness or vertigo. ● Diaphoresis : Profuse sweating, especially in the upper body, can be a symptom.
● Irritability : Clients may become easily agitated or irritable. ● Hunger : Sudden hunger or a strong desire to eat may be present.
Severe Hypoglycemia with levels less than 54 mg/dL (Hypoglycemic Crisis) can include: ● Alterations in Consciousness : This may include confusion or unconsciousness. ● Lethargy : Clients may become extremely drowsy or lethargic. ● Convulsions or Seizures : Seizures can occur in severe cases. ● Clumsiness and Lack of Coordination : Clients may exhibit poor motor skills. ● Muscular Weakness : Muscle strength may be compromised. ● Agitation : Restlessness or agitation can be observed. ● Coma : Severe hypoglycemia may progress to a comatose state. Signs and Symptoms of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) : DKA is a life-threatening condition associated with very high blood glucose levels. Primarily seen in type 1 diabetes. Signs and symptoms of DKA include: ● Ketones in the Urine : Ketone bodies can be detected in the urine. ● Very High Blood Glucose Levels : Blood glucose levels are significantly elevated. ● Fruity Odor on Breath : Clients may have a distinct fruity or acetone-like breath odor.
