N104 Study Guide

Chapter 7 1. C - Covering unused electrical outlets helps to lower the risk of electrical shock. 2. D - Laws and common sense require the use of car seats or seatbelts for all drivers and passengers in a vehicle. 3. C – Elderly patients are at the highest risk for falls due to impaired balance and equilibrium. Loose rugs may cause the older adult to slip, trip, or fall. 4. A - Any home with a gas appliance should be equipped with a carbon monoxide detector placed in proximity to the possible source of the gas. Smoke detectors should be placed in all living areas of the house and batteries should be replaced every six months. 5. D - Side rails have been known to cause injuries to patients who attempt to get out of the bed under the rails. Side rails should be used for any patient at risk for falling out of the bed. Side rails never relieve the nurse of the responsibility for checking regularly on the patient. The nurse must always be aware of the facility policy regarding the use of the side rails and restraints. 6. A - Elderly patients are at the highest risk for falls. 7. B - Houses built before 1990 might have been painted with lead paint. The family should be advised to have the paint tested to ensure that the child is not exposed to lead. Because the home is all electric, there is little risk for carbon monoxide poisoning. Since the pesticides and cleaning supplies are locked in the pantry, the risk from pesticide poisoning is minimal. 8. D - Due to the patient's previous repeated exposure to jet engine noise, he may be at high risk for hearing loss. The nurse must always be aware of the patient's previous employment, whichmay affect his health today. 9. A - The nurse should understand the RACE acronym and should teach patients and families to learn and implement this acronym. Rescue anyone in danger, send out the alarm, attempt to confine the fire by closing doors, and extinguish the fire if it is small and can be done safely. 10. D - Exposure to high doses of radiation will call all of these symptoms. Ultimately, radiation exposure can lead to organ shutdown and death.
