Leavell and Clark’s Agent-Host-Environment Model The agent-host-environment model, also called the ecologic model, predicts illness based on risk factors from the interaction of agent, host, and environment. The balance of the three factors leads to health; when they are not in balance, disease or illness occurs. The interactive elements are: • Agent: The agent is any environmental stress, which can lead to illness or disease. The stressors might be biologic, chemical, mechanical, psychosocial, or physical. • Host: The host is the person who may be at risk for a disease or illness. Any existing physiological condition may make an individual more susceptible to illness or disease. • Environment: The environment consists of all the factors external to the host thatmay dispose the individual to the development of illness or disease. Environmental factors include climate, economics, sound, and social factors. The three elements of the model interact with each other to produce a health state that is constantly changing.
