Nursing 108

N108: Transition to the Registered Professional Nurse Role Study Guide of 172 specialty units and ICUs. Information technology is being used to store research data, disseminate research and practice information, and retrieve information for use. The study and management of information technology is referred to as the field of informatics. There is a national specialty group in nursing that focuses on nursing informatics. Biomedical Technology Technology based on biology with a specialized body of knowledge related to the use of organisms, cells, or cell-derived ingredients for the purpose of developing products which are technically, scientifically, and clinically useful, or alteration of biologic function at the molecular level is referred to as genetic engineering. Biotechnology harnesses cellular and bio-molecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve lives and the health of our planet (i.e. microorganisms have been used to make bread, cheese, and preserve milk for many years). Modern biotechnology provides breakthrough products and technologies to combat debilitating and rare diseases. More than 250 biotechnology health care products and vaccines have been made available to patients. Information Technology Computerized devices are increasingly used to manage the direct care of patients. From automatic blood pressure measuring devices, to IV controllers, to monitoring equipment done both locally and from a distance, these devices are changing the way nursing is practiced. Computerization of patient data began in most facilities with the computerization of payment and billing data. The beginning of the 21 st century was characterized by directives from Medicare and Medicaid to computerize patient records and communication. The Health Information Portability Act of 1996 (HIPPA) mandated that all billing to the federal government be done electronically. Federal Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009 invested billions of dollars to accelerate the adoption of health information technology. Health information exchanged electronically enables providers to have better, faster access to patient information. Health information technology enables consumers to electronically review their health records, correct and add information to their health record, schedule appointments, order prescription refills, and review health educational materials. Computerized pharmacy records and laboratory data has enabled providers to respond more effectively to information as it becomes available and has decreased the nurses’ need to process large volumes of paperwork related to medication administration. Computerized Physician/Provider Order Entry (CPOE) Computerized physician/provider order entry is a computerized system that allows direct entry of medical orders and instructions for treatment of patients by medical practitioners. Orders are communicated through a computer network to medical staff or other various departments responsible for fulfilling an order, including pharmacy, radiology, or laboratory. The use of CPOE decreases delay in completing orders, reduces errors related to handwriting or transcriptions, allows order entry at point-of-care or offsite, provides error checking for duplicate or incorrect doses or tests, and simplifies inventory and positing of charges. The use of CPOE has helped to eliminate the time-consuming process for nurses of contacting providers to obtain information when it was ©2018 Achieve Page 103
