Nursing 108

N108: Transition to the Registered Professional Nurse Role Study Guide the patient’s current condition and medical treatment. Nursing informatics is largely focused on improved documentation within health care facilities to reduce operating and patient care costs, as well as to improve productivity and enhance the quality of patient care. Computerized provider order entry (CPOE) has freed nurses from order transcription and related, order-clarifying phone calls, as well as improving patient safety. It has been estimated that provider order entry can reduce serious medication error and adverse drug events (ADEs) by 55%. Additionally, test results are now available at the point of care shortly after the tests are completed, allowing interventions to be initiated in a much timelier manner. Security and patient privacy must be upheld while achieving the goal of transforming data into useful knowledge. Integrating informatics with evidence-based practice (EBP) can only help improve the care provided to patients. Because there is so much information available today, in order to use technology to support evidence-based practice, nurses must understand and be literate about information. Key knowledge includes: • Knowing the kind of information needed • Being able to efficiently and effectively access the information • Being able to critically examine the information obtained and the sources from which it came • Using the information effectively, as an individual or team member, to achieve a specific purpose
