o Antidepressants, antihypertensives, and antihistamines o Prolonged bicycling (can affect blood flow to the penis d/t compression) • Psychological causes: o Depression, anxiety, and mental health issues o Stress o Relationship issues • Treatment: o Medications: Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and Stendra  Enhances the effects of nitric oxide with stimulation  Testosterone replacement: If levels are low, may be initial treatment o Mechanical treatment:  Penis pump: Pulls blood into the penis via a vacuum; band is placed at the base of the penis to maintain erection  Penile implants: Inflatable rods surgically placed in both sides of the penis; can control timing of erection; used only after all other methods have been unsuccessful due to the risk for infection o Psychological counseling 7.4 Alternative Treatments for Reproductive Disorders Menopause Treatments (Female) • Bioidentical hormone therapy: Custom-made HRT from a doctor’s order o Viewed as experimental o No proof that they are safer than FDA approved HRT • Phytoestrogens: Have estrogen effect o Soy, black cohosh, wild yam, dong quai, and valerian root o Effectiveness not proven and risks are unknown • Lifestyle changes: o Healthy diet and weight loss o Tobacco cessation o Exercise o Stress reduction
