Nursing 209

N209: Reproductive Health Study Guide

Menopause Treatment (Male) • Decreased testosterone levels lead to fatigue, decreased sexual desire, and moodiness • Dietary changes: Healthy diet increases energy o Increased zinc intake: Serum testosterone levels increase in men with an increase in intake of zinc (oysters, crab legs, cashews, and chick peas) o Increased physical activity: Improves sleep, muscle mass, and testosterone levels • Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption 7.5 The Nursing Process Assessment • Assess the patient’s health history, including any factors that may be contributing to sexual dysfunction (i.e., smoking, alcohol/substance abuse, or risky sexual behaviors leading to STDs). • Assess the patient’s readiness to learn about reproductive disorders and treatments. • Evaluate diagnostic testing results. Analysis/Diagnosis • Identify nursing diagnosis related to reproductive disorders. Planning • Establish expected outcomes related to health promotion, maintenance, and restoration (patient will address fear of sexual relations after hysterectomy; patient will rate pain on a scale of 0-10 related to endometriosis). • Establish nursing interventions using standards of care and established protocols (educate patient about available sexual dysfunction treatments and pain relief measures). Implementation • Initiate nursing interventions to move the patient toward expected outcomes by promoting continuity of care, supervising activities, modifying the environment, and educating the patient about medications and treatments, along with expected potential surgical outcomes. Evaluation • Assess the patient’s response to nursing interventions and progress towards expected outcomes. Revise the plan of care as needed (reevaluate pain management in response to patient’s increase in pain; revise wound care in response to signs of infection postop). Nursing Diagnosis Pertinent to Reproductive Disorders • Anxiety related to infertility, sexual dysfunction, and hysterectomy • Urinary retention related to prostate change • Insomnia related to menopausal change • Sexual dysfunction related to decrease in libido and hormonal change • Risk for situational low self-esteem related to infertility, menopausal changes, and sexual changes
