Chapter Four: Intrapartal Period Definitions • Gravida: The number of pregnancies a woman has had • Para: The number of pregnancies completed beyond 20 weeks gestation (pregnancies with multiples count as one) • Nulligravida: Having never been pregnant • Primigravida: First pregnancy • Primipara: Woman who has given birth for the first time • Multipara: Woman who has had two or more pregnancies resulting in potentially viable fetuses • Multigravida: Two or more pregnancies 4.1 Labor Labor is a series of rhythmic uterine contractions causing effacement and dilation of the uterine cervix in order to expel the products of conception. • EDC: Estimated date of confinement • EDD: Estimated due date • Naegele’s Rule: Used to calculate EDC • First day of LMP plus one year, then subtract 3 months and add 7 days (280 days from LMP) • Cervical dilation: 1-10 cm • Cervical effacement: Thinning of the cervix; ranges from 0-100% • Engagement: When the largest part of the head has entered the pelvis • Presentation: The way the baby is positioned to come down the birth canal • Bloody show: Small amount of blood-tinged mucous that precedes labor • Station: Where the presenting part is in the pelvis in relation to the ischial spines Labor Stages • First stage: o Onset of labor to 10 cm o Has two phases, latent and active • Second stage: o Time from full dilation to delivery of the fetus
