5.10 Neurological Development • Exhibited by presence of reflex • Absent reflexes, or those present past normal age, indicate neurological problems • Normal newborn reflexes that are absent later: o Moro: Occurs when an infant is startled or feels they are falling; startled look, arms flail out to the side with palms up and thumbs flexed (one sided Moro may indicate brachial plexus injury) o Suckling: Infant sucks when touched around mouth o Rooting: Infant will turn towards side in which their cheek is stroked o Step: Infant will make stepping motions when their foot touches a hard surface

5.11 Sensory Development • Hearing: Developed at birth; can respond to sound by turning towards it • Taste: Develops by 72 hours of age • Smell: Can tell mother’s breast milk • Vision: Least mature sense; focus only within 7-12 inches 5.12 Behavioral Adaptation Two reactive periods with one sleep period: • First reactive period: Birth to 30 minutes of life o Alert, suckling, and rooting o Allows bonding and breastfeeding • Sleep: 30-120 minutes of life o Decreased responsiveness with no interest in rooting or suckling o Relaxed • Second period of reactivity: Lasts 2-8 hours and begins after sleep period o Increased peristalsis with passage of meconium o Increase in muscle tone and activity

5.13 Gastrointestinal Adaptation • Reaches maturity at 36-38 weeks of gestation • Stomach capacity at birth is six ml; increase to approximately 90 ml by the end of the first week
