N209: Reproductive Health Study Guide

Postmaturity • Babies born after 42 weeks • Becomes medically significant if fetus outgrows placental capability; referred to as post- maturity syndrome (can occur prior to EDC as well) • Complications: o Loss of vernix (protective covering to skin; leads to dry, scaly skin) o Fetal weight loss o Passing of meconium in utero o Fetal distress o Fetal death • Warning signs: o Decrease in fundal height o Decreased AFI Large for Gestational Age (LGA) • Greater than 90 th percentile for gestational age • Macrosomia: More than 4000 grams at term • Most common cause: Maternal diabetes • Complications: o Birth trauma o Neonatal hypoglycemia o Hyperviscosity o Hyperbilirubinemia Small for Gestational Age (SGA) • Less than 10 th percentile for gestational age • Symmetric growth restriction: o Results from problem early in pregnancy (first trimester) o Entire body is affected o Caused by genetic disorders and first trimester infections (CMV, Rubella, or Toxoplasmosis) Asymmetric Growth Restriction • Results from placental or maternal problems occurring late second or third trimester • Organs/tissues not evenly affected • Causes:
