N213: Health Differences Across the Lifespan 3 Study Guide • Advance diet slowly, beginning with soft foods; ice cream, applesauce, gelatin, frozen pops, mashed potatoes, and soups will provide needed liquids and are easy to eat • Encourage increased fluids • Teach parents to avoid acidic, hot, spicy, or rough foods, as well as milk products, for one week after surgery • Teach parents that the child can go back to school around 10 days post-operatively • The child should avoid strenuous exercise for one week • Instruct parents to call the physician if any complications develop, including bleeding after ten days or a temperature over 102⁰F Expected outcomes for tonsillitis: • Patient demonstrates increased comfort and reduced pain • Patient remains free from complications, hemorrhage, and infection • Patient maintains adequate fluid and nutritional intake • Demonstrates unlabored respirations • Parents verbalize understanding of home care instructions, complications, and diet
