N213: Health Differences Across the Lifespan 3 Study Guide Signs and symptoms of chlamydia: • Odorous discharge • Vaginal bleeding • Painful periods • • Itching and burning in genital organs • Painful urination • Conjunctivitis (newborn infants) • Pneumonia (newborn infants) Signs and symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease: • Fever • Abdominal pain • Pelvic pain • Vaginal discharge (mucopurulent) • Nausea • Vomiting • Dysuria • Cervical tenderness and dyspareunia • Urinary frequency • Abnormal vaginal bleeding Nursing assessment for sexually transmitted diseases: • Inquire about symptoms: fever, pain, discharge, duration, and severity • Take a thorough sexual history: multiple partners and use of condoms • Inquire about contraceptive use and menstrual history • Ask if partner(s) were symptomatic • History of sexually transmitted diseases • Assess emotional response to sexually transmitteddiseases • Assess knowledge of STDs: disease transmission, condom use, and proper treatment • Check abdomen and pelvic area for tenderness, pain, guarding, rebound, andmasses • Check for genital warts or lesions • Review laboratory reports: o Blood testing for rapid plasma reagent (RPR) or venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL); fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS); mcirohemagglutination (MHA) for confirmation o CBC with differential o Cultures for the syphilis spirochete fromlesion/chancre o Culture for N. gonococci for gonorrhea o Chlamydia culture o HPV smear done with pap smear Dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
