Chapter 7: Human Anatomy & Physiology – Part 2 7.1 The Human Brain The brain contains almost 97% of the neural tissue of the adult human body. A “typical” brain weighs 1.4 kg (3 lbs.) and has a volume of 1200 cc (71 in 3 ). Brain size varies among individuals.

7.1.1 Brain Regions and Landmarks The biggest region of the adult brain is the cerebrum. The cerebrum of the adult brain can be divided into large, paired cerebral hemispheres. The cerebral hemispheres are covered by neural cortex, a superficial layer of gray matter. Elevated ridges of this cerebral cortex called gyri serve to increase the cerebral surface area.
