Nursing Preparation Study Guide

Nursing Preparation Study Guide Idea Clustering or Mapping Clustering is similar to brainstorming. Both are visual representations of your ideas. Clustering works well as a second prewrite because it can organize some of the ideas you wrote down in your freewriting or brainstorming session. In clustering, you write a narrow topic in the center of the paper than draw lines to smaller topics then from those topics to smaller topics. Finding your thesis statement A thesis is a way of understanding a broad topic. For every topic, there can be many theses. The word thesis should not be confused with opinion. An opinion does not require explanation or support. A thesis requires that you have evidence that explains and supports your assertions. Well written papers should always have a well-supported thesis. An essay with no thesis statement indicates the author is uninformed and has no authority on the topic. A thesis is a statement you respond to with a yes or no. Your task, as the writer, is to choose a thesis that you can support with evidence and argue persuasively. After you have charted all possible theses, you can choose one that works best for you. Writing Once you have finished brainstorming and gathering your ideas, it is time to start writing. Remember the initial process is not about grammar, spelling, and correct sentence structure as much as it is converting your ideas into an essay/paragraph. A lot of writers will often times write an outline prior to writing their first draft. The outline allows them to organize their thoughts from their brainstorming session into an organized fashion. It also gives the author a chance to further research their topic if they find that some of their main ideas are lacking support. To practice writing try free writing exercises. In free writing you read a topic and just write about the first thing that comes to mind that pertains to the topic for a certain amount of time (set by you). During this time do not obsess with the formality of your essay; just write what comes to you. Listed below are a few topics you might consider free writing about: • Parents often feel conflicted over getting their child a pet to care for. Some argue that it teaches the child responsibility while others argue that child are not yet capable of caring for the animal and the burden of care falls back to the parents. Write an argument for against children getting their own animal as a pet. • Describe your favorite holiday memory. • What was the strangest dream you have experienced? • Write a letter to yourself about what you would like your life to be like in 10 years.
