3.10 The New World Powers The NewWorld in North America became a battleground for control. The Spanish had dominated the south, the French dominated the middle and north, while the English controlled the eastern coastal colonies as well as parts of Canada. All of these European powers came to find gold and become wealthy. Although large quantities of gold were not found, many made wealth in the raw materials this new land offered. Eventually, war would break out between these powers in an attempt to take North America for themselves. In the evolution of the United States, the English colonies are the most significant in the transformation and will be reviewed in more detail in the following chapters.
