The proximal carpal bones are the scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, and pisiform. Five metacarpal bones articulate with the distal carpal bones and support the hand. Roman numerals I–V are used to identify the metacarpal bones, beginning with the lateral metacarpal bone. Each hand has 14 finger bones, or phalanges.
