Administer intravenous medication as assigned: a) Determine drug compatibility b) Determine drops per minute (gravity flow) or mL per hour (ICD setting) c) Prime tubing before initiating flow of IV medication d) Clear air from tubing before initiating flow of IV medication e) Cleanse the hub f) Aspirate for blood return unless contraindicated when an intermittent venous access device is used g) Use sterile technique h) Regulate flow rate to deliver the prescribed amount in the assigned period of time (+/- 5 drops per minute for medication delivered via gravity flow) i) Instruct clinical faculty to set the mL per hour for medications delivered via ICD 9. Administer oral medication as assigned: a) Administer one medication at a time 10. Administer medication through G-Tube as assigned: a) Administer one medication at a time b) Flush tube as assigned 11. Maintain environmental safety a) Discard unused medication and/or packaging in designated container b) Engage safety device on needle prior to discarding c) Dispose of syringes and needles in designated medical waste container 12. Communicate to assigned nurse pertinent finding/data related to medication(s) recorded on MAR • Evaluate: 1. Learner understanding of education provided 2. Patient response to medication if appropriate 3. Condition of insertion site following completed infusion of assigned intravenous medication 4. Condition of insertion site when assigned intravenous medication still infusing, before exiting patient room, and prior to entering evaluation phase of the PCS • Document the following on the MAR unless otherwise specified: 1. Education provided 2. Learner understanding of education 3. Prior to preparing medication:
