n some untouched woodland property that lies adjacent to a public park. The land loaded with fossil fuels. Recently, the availability of fossil fuels and lumber has decreased, halting the building of homes, schools, churches, and other wooden structures throughout the country. In addition, all products related to fossil fuels have become scarce. Lastly, the price of both lumber and fossil fuels has made them unattainable for the vast majority of individuals. Read the following dialogue and answer the questions afterward. Sibling A: I think we should leave the land exactly as it is. I don’t want to remove even a single tree. The system should remain intact and not be impacted in any unnatural way. Sibling B: We ought to take out just a few trees, so the remaining trees can fill in and not be choked out. We can then take those few trees and sell them. Doing this, we can minimize impact while simultaneously providing some much needed lumber for others…and money for us! Sibling C: Wait a minute “B!” I agree with “A.” The value in our land lies in its beauty! Listen to it, let others look and listen. They will experience something they can’t possibly experience anywhere else. Let’s not touch it. Sibling D: Enough of this babble! Don’t you three realize that without homes and fuel people will freeze and die? Even one death is too many. This land is here for our use. Owning it is only worth it if we use it to help our fellow man. I vote we cut some trees and mine some fossil fuels. Heck, making money isn’t important here, but helping others is. Helping others would be the highest good that could come from our land. Sibling E: I agree with “D.” We should do what benefits the most people. Sibling F: Nature is good, right, and well-balanced. Any intrusion we make into the land must be justified. 75. Which of the following is most like Sibling C’s view? a. Ralph Waldo Emerson b. Henry David Thoreau c. Ecocentrism d. All of the above 76.
