Ethics

Ethics Study Guide perspectives. This doctrine, which has deeply influenced post-modern thought, is called perspectivism . Because they can have different, even conflicting, meanings over the course of their existence, Nietzsche does not believe that concepts are based in reality. Instead he explores what influences the different meanings that concepts have adopted over time. He concludes by finding force and will. All of existence, Nietzsche asserts, is a struggle between different wills for the feeling of power. He describes this will to power as a constant competition with others, often for no other purpose than to feel superior to those who have been overcome. He argues that our current ascetic morality comes from a resentment and hatred toward anything that is more powerful, stronger, or healthier than ourselves. To Nietzsche nothing is sacred, absolute, or even true. Our morality is not a set of duties passed down from God, but an arbitrary code that has randomly evolved. The only conviction he holds is that everything and everyone is in a constant battle for more power. The only virtue is a will that is powerful, and free from bad conscience, hatred, and resentment. He sees our present ascetic morality as being harmful to the health and prosperity of our species.
