Using a table to graph a relationship (like a line), is the most straightforward method. To graph an equation of a line (or quadratic - more on this later), select some values of and then evaluate those values in the given equation to get the corresponding values of . Use these and values to form ordered pairs, plot these on the coordinate plane, and then connect them.
Example 4.2.1
= 2 3
Graph the equation
− 6
Step 1: Select some values for .

Step 2: Substitute the selected values of into the equation and solve for .
2 3
2 3
2 3
(−6) − 6 = −10
(−3) − 6 = −8
(0) − 6 = −6

(3) − 6 = −4
(6) − 6 = −2

Step 3: Plot the ordered pairs.

Step 4: Connect the ordered pairs together using a straight edge.
