Fundamentals of Mathematics
This same method can be applied to any equation; you just have to know the generalized shape. For instance,
• quadratic equations (the largest term is to the second power) forms a "U" like shape • cubic equations (the largest term is to the third power) creates a sideways "S" like shape • quartic equations (the largest term is to the fourth power) forms a "W" like shape
Quadratic ( 2 )
Cubic ( 3 )
Quartic ( 4 )
Linear ( )
You can use the table method to graph any equation.
Example 4.2.2
Graph: 2 − 6 + 7
(0) 2 − 6(0) + 7 =
0
7
(1) 2 − 6(1) + 7 =
1
2
(2) 2 − 6(2) + 7 =
2
−1
(3) 2 − 6(3) + 7 =
3
−2
(4) 2 − 6(4) + 7 =
4
−1
(5) 2 − 6(5) + 7 =
5
2
(6) 2 − 6(6) + 7 =
6
