N108: Transition to the Registered Professional Nurse Role Study Guide Professional ursing Organizations American Nurses Association-Political Action Committee (ANA-PAC) The ANA political action organization is titled the ANA-Political Action Committee (ANA-PAC). The ANA-PAC actually lobbies for the passage or defeat of bills and supports candidates for public office. The ANA-PAC was established to promote the improvement of the healthcare system in the U.S. by raising funds from members and contributing to support worthy candidates for federal office who have demonstrated their belief in the legislative and regulatory agenda of the ANA. National League for Nursing (NLN) The mission of the NLN states, “The National League for Nursing promotes excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce.” The NLN is involved in accrediting nursing schools and provides consultations and publishing expertise, as well as conducts research and testing. It is tax exempt and cannot get involved with politics. The goals of the organization focus on four areas: • Being a leader in nursing education • Commitment to members • Acting as a champion for nurse educators • Advancing the science of nursing education State Nursing Associations Some of the major workplace concerns of nurses are emerging as topics of state legislation and each state has political action committees. The ANA has identified nine major state level legislative issues of importance to nurses which include the following: • Prohibition of mandatory overtime • Nurse staffing systems and rations • Nursing workforce data collection • Nursing education incentives • Ergonomics (the study of workplace design; the study of how a workplace and the equipment used there can best be designed for comfort, efficiency, safety, and productivity_ • Needle-stick injuries • Nursing quality indicators • Violence in the workplace • Whistleblower protection Other Healthcare Organizations American Medical Association (AMA) The mission of the AMA is to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The AMA has a House of Delegates consisting of representation from every state and the
