American Hospital Association (AHA) The AHA was founded in 1898 as a national organization that provides education for health care leaders and is a source of information on health care issues and trends. The AHA represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. The AHA was formed by nearly 5,000 hospitals, health care systems, networks, other providers of care and 43,000 individual members. The AHA ensures that members' perspectives and needs are heard and addressed in national health policy development, legislative and regulatory debates, and judicial matters. Special Interest Groups Tobacco Industry Tobacco products are one of the most heavily marketed consumer products in the United States. The five largest cigarette manufacturers spent $12.49 billion, or over $34 million dollars a day, to promote and advertise their products as data from 2006. During 2009, the U.S. FDA was given strong authority to regulate tobacco products that would affect how tobacco products are marketed in future years. It has been shown that every 10 percent increase in the price of cigarettes, reduces youth consumption by 7%. Labor Unions Under the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932, several acts were passed related to the rights and privileges of the worker. These culminated in the establishment of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), a quasi-judicial body that was to ensure proper enforcement of the conditions of the legislation. Unions in the health care industry have thrived, making their presence known in hospitals, nursing homes, and home health care services. Union membership in health care rose by more than 200,000 workers since 2005. Health care is one of the only industries that is adding jobs, one of the largest employers in any market, and because it is an industry in turmoil, it makes a good target for unions. Factors making health care an attractive battlefield for unions are as follows: • The Affordable Care Act • Recent actions by the National Labor Relations Board • A wave of mergers and acquisitions among healthcare facilities • Growing frustration among America’s nurses and physicians
