The nurse participates in the advancement of the profession through contributions to practice, education, administration, and knowledge development. The nurse must use evidence for the practice of professional nursing to review or develop clinical practice guidelines. Nurses at all levels must participate in local, national, and international organizations to advance professional practice. Experienced nurses should work in educator and preceptor roles to assure that those they workwith possess the knowledge and skills essential for professional practice. The nurse collaborates with other health professionals and the public in promoting community, national, and international efforts to meet health needs. The nurse should strive to play a key role in promoting community, national, and international health. All nurses should be active in their communities, country, and the world to address health concerns. For example, nurses can staff school health clinics and provide training for parent volunteers in the clinics. Nurses can participate with churches and national organizations such as the American Heart Association, the American Kidney Foundation, and many others to raise funds, provide screening exams, and provide leadership. The profession of nursing, as represented by associations and their members, is responsible for articulating nursing values, for maintaining the integrity of the profession and its practice, and for shaping social policy. Through participation in professional associations, nurses have the opportunity to articulate nursing values, maintain the integrity of the nursing profession, and shape social policy.
