Chapter 6

1. C Ethnicity is the state of belonging to a group that has a common cultural tradition. Race refers to the major biological divisions of mankind. Stereotyping refers to the standardized and simplified conceptions of a group based on previous assumptions. 2. D Stereotyping refers to the standardized and simplified conceptions of a group based on previous assumptions. 3. B The culturally competent nurse must have a high awareness of cultural differences, her own worldview and skills, and knowledge of practices in different cultures. 4. A One of the primary premises of Dr. Leininger’s theory is that caring is absolutely essential for well-being. 5. D Any time the nurse encounters a patient with any sort of belief system, it is essential that further assessment be done to determine how important the religion is and whether or not the individual wants a priest to be called. Although it would not be incorrect to confer with the family, the first step must be a more in-depth assessment. 6. A The incidence of hypertension in theAfrican American population is extremely high, so every member of this population should be assessed for hypertension and symptoms that might accompany that condition. 7. C Since the patient is also making pleasant conversation with the nurse, it is not likely that the lack of eye contact is due to being depressed, angry, or disrespectful. It is more likely that this patient is part of a culture that finds it disrespectful to make eye contact. 8. A The Islamic family is patriarchal and the man of the family is head of the household and usually must be involved in all decisions. 9. B The nurse should not use stereotypes to assume that limited formal education means the patient cannot understand higher levels of speech. In this case, the nurse should ask questions to determine if the patient can read and write and how much the individual reads. If the individual quit school in the 5th grade but has continued to read and educate himself, the instruction for this patient will be much different than if the individual does not read and did not continue with his own education. 10. D Unless there is reason to believe that a religious leader will interfere with care, it may be helpful to allow the priest to visit the patient and be involved in his plan of care. The culturally competent nurse will research any new culture or religion in order to determine if there are specific cultural beliefs that should be addressed.
