If the patient speaks another language, has a physical or mental disability, or just doesn’t understand something, help should be given so the patient can make informed healthcare decisions. Choice of Providers and Plans The patient has the right to choose providers who can give high quality healthcare when needed. Access to Emergency Services If the patient has severe pain, an injury, or sudden illness, they have the right to be screened and stabilized using emergency services. The patient should be able to use these services whenever and wherever needed, without having to wait for authorization and without any financial penalty. Taking part in Treatment Decisions The patient has the right to know treatment options and take part in decisions about their care. Parents, guardians, family members, or others that the patient selects can speak for the patient if they cannot make their own decisions. Respect andNon-Discrimination The patient has a right to considerate, respectful care from doctors, health plan representatives, and other healthcare providers that does not discriminate against the individual.
