(Note whether or not the patient makes eye contact.) • Religion: Questions to ask might include: Is religion important to you? What religion do you practice? Are there any religious practices or restrictions that you follow? • Social systems, including economic values, political systems, and educational patterns: Questions to ask might include: Where did you grow up, in a rural or urban area? Do you live in a neighborhood with others of the same religion or ethnicity as you? • Diet and food habits: Questions to ask might include: What type of food do you prefer? What foods do you dislike? Are you allergic to any foods? • Health and illness belief systems, including behaviors, decision making, and use of healthcare providers: Questions to ask might include: What are the things you do to stay healthy? What made you sick this time? How long do you expect it to last? What kinds of treatments do you think you should receive? What kind of healing practices do you use (acupuncture, magnets, crystals, etc.)? Analysis When the assessment is complete, the nurse must analyze the data and develop and prioritize nursing diagnoses related to cultural needs of the individual. Nursing diagnoses that may be appropriate include: • Impaired communication (related to language difference) • Ineffective family coping • Fear • Ineffective individual coping • Spiritual distress • Non-compliance related to cultural differences Planning Expected outcomes for the nursing diagnoses might include: • Impaired communication (related to language difference): Communication between the patient and nurse will be clear. An interpreter will be readily available. Patient will be able to repeat information and teaching. • Ineffective family coping: The patient and family will freely express their needs to the healthcare team. • Fear: The patient will express that he is comfortable with the treatment and has full understanding of the treatment. • Ineffective individual coping: The patient will express his fears and concerns and will collaborate with the team in creating plans.
