Maslow’s hierarchy of needs:

Planning Planning and interventions must be based on the assessment and nursing diagnoses, and should be done in collaboration with the individual, family, caregivers, and members of the healthcare team. After the needs are prioritized, the team must establish expected outcomes related to health promotion, health maintenance, and health restoration that define how the team will know if the interventions and plan are successful. These patient-centered goals should be based on established nursing standards and protocols taking into consideration ethical and legal implications, standards of care, and evidence-based practice. After establishing attainable goals with the patient and family, interventions appropriate to an individual with functional ability deficits might include: • Advocate for development of community facilities for recreational activities • Encourage physical activity (walking, swimming, and bicycling) in all age groups; at least 30 minutes 3-5 times a week • Encourage range of motion (ROM) in individuals who are unable to do more strenuous activities • Review basic nutrition and advocate for healthy meals in schools • Provide education about breastfeeding as way to decrease mortality and infectious disease rates • Provide education about nutrition including the USDA's MyPlate initiative that simplifies the old recommended food pyramid (see figure below) • Provide smoking cessation education and education about the dangers of tobacco use • Screen for substance abuse
