N209: Reproductive Health Study Guide

Transient Tachypnea of the ewborn (TTN) • Also known as neonatal wet lung syndrome • Transient respiratory distress caused by delayed fetal lung fluid absorption • Risk factors: o Preterm delivery o Elective C-section o Respiratory depression at birth • Recovers in 2-3 days with supportive treatment Apnea of Prematurity • Respiratory pauses greater than 20 seconds, or less than 20 seconds with associated bradycardia (<80 bpm), central cyanosis and/or O2 saturation less than 85% in infants younger than 37 weeks gestation • Occurs in 25% of preterm infants; usually begins 2-3 days after birth • Causes: o CNS immaturity o Airway obstruction • Usually resolves by 37 weeks Retinopathy of Prematurity • Abnormal vascularization of the retina bilaterally in preterm infants • Increased incidence in low birth weight babies • Retina is not fully vascularized until birth • Diagnosis is made via opthalmoscopic exam Necrotizing Enterocolitis • Acquired, most frequently, in preterm or sick newborns • The most common GI emergency in newborns • 85% of cases occur in preterm infants • Mucosal or deep intestinal necrosis • Other risk factors: o PROM o Asphyxia at birth o SGA o CHD o Exchange transfusion
